MCCLAIN COMPANIES: HIP ON THE SQUARE
On Labor Day in 1992, Ken and Cindy McClain and their five children were among the throng of thousands rallying around Presidential candidate Bill Clinton as Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow" was blasted around Independence Square.
When the McClains watched the coverage on the news that night, the rundown structures they saw on TV didn't reflect the pride they felt for their city. "Don't Stop"became their personal battle cry for kicking off a hard-hitting revitalization of historic Independence Square.
They immediately began purchasing and renovating historic buildings around the Square. In 1998, they opened their crown jewel. Ophelia's is a modern restaurant that also boasts banquet space and an inn.
With the success of Ophelia's, the McClains went on to open several more enterprises, including eight additional eateries, four retail shops and three entertainment and fitness venues. Bill Clinton has yet to come back and visit, but that's okay.
Thanks to the real progress of the McClains, Independence Square's "tomorrow" has arrived in real style.
