Independence Square Walking Tour
The locals love to meet new arrivals from the trail. Make the Visitor Experience Center your first stop on Saturday morning to gather supplies needed to enjoy your Pioneer weekend in Independence. Youâ€™ll enjoy a guided tour around the Historic Independence Square and meet the first of many 1849 townspeople.
Head Out on the Wagon Train
from the Historic Square
Enjoy a ride on a mule drawn wagon headed to the National Frontier Trails Museum where youâ€™ll enjoy lunch for four. While on your journey to the Trails Museum, learn how covered wagons performed on the trails, their mechanics and the animals that assisted in travel.
Meet Original Pioneer Trailblazers
After lunch you will enjoy a guided tour of the National Frontier Trails Museum and meet some of the Original Independence Trailblazers.
Experience Life in 1849
Your next stop will take you to the 1827 Log Courthouse where youâ€™ll meet people from the past and hear what life was like in Independence in 1849.
Wagon Train Back to the Square
Your trip back to the square will focus on the Santa Fe Trail, a route of commerce and cultural exchange. The last return trip from the Trails Museum at 3:30 p.m. forms part of a wagon train arrival from Santa Fe schedule for 4 p.m. on the square. You will be greeted with fanfare by people of the past.
